Hookah lounges are easy to find in Tokyo, but a few local rules can surprise first-time visitors — especially around age limits, seat charges and payment. This guide walks you through what to expect, using our own lounge, shisha bar IORI in Gakugei-daigaku, as a real example.
Shisha, hookah, nargile — what’s the difference?
None, really. In Japan the word you’ll see most often is shisha (シーシャ), but it’s the same water pipe known as hookah in the US or nargile in Turkey and the Middle East. Flavored tobacco is gently heated with charcoal, and the smoke passes through water before you draw it through the hose, which makes it smooth and aromatic.

Never smoked before?
That’s fine — many of our guests hadn’t either. Shisha smoke is cooled by the water, so it feels much milder than a cigarette, and you can enjoy the aroma without inhaling deeply. If you’d rather skip nicotine altogether, ask for a nicotine-free flavor. Start with light, fruity or minty flavors and take it slowly.
Age rules: 20 and over, bring your ID
The legal age for smoking in Japan is 20, not 18. Shisha bars follow the same rule, and most will ask for ID at the door.
- You must be 20 or older to enter, even if you only plan to have a drink.
- Bring a photo ID — for visitors, a passport is the safest choice.
- Nicotine-free flavors don’t change the rule; the venue itself is 20+.
Prices: what a visit usually costs
Pricing in Tokyo varies by lounge, but most places charge per pipe plus a seat charge. Here’s how it works at shisha bar IORI (as of September 2026):
- Shisha: ¥2,800 per pipe — the same price for every flavor, including seasonal and original mixes.
- Sharing: one pipe serves up to two people. Groups of three or more sharing one pipe pay a ¥1,500 share charge per pipe.
- Seat charge (per person, based on arrival time): free before 6 PM, ¥500 from 6 PM, ¥750 from 9 PM, ¥1,000 from 12 AM.
- Drinks: soft drinks from ¥580, alcoholic drinks from ¥780.
We ask for one pipe per two guests and one drink per person. If you arrive between 1 PM and 6 PM, our Day Sets (from ¥3,100) are the best value.
As a rough example, two people arriving at 7 PM who share one pipe and order one drink each would pay about ¥2,800 + ¥1,000 (seat charge for two) + two drinks.
Payment: many lounges are cashless
More and more small bars in Tokyo are going cashless, and we are one of them — no cash accepted. We take Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners, Discover, Apple Pay / Google Pay, Suica/PASMO and other transit IC cards, iD, QUICPay, PayPay, Alipay+ and WeChat Pay.
How to order
- Ask for the English menu. We have one, and our in-store mobile ordering system supports English too.
- Pick a flavor — or let us help. Tell the staff what you like (fruity, minty, sweet, tea-like) and we’ll suggest a mix. Not sure where to start? Try our Flavor Finder: answer five quick questions and show the result to the staff.
- Order a drink. One drink per person is required, and it’s a good idea anyway — sipping water or a soft drink between puffs keeps things comfortable.
- Wait a few minutes. The pipe is prepared and the charcoal heated before it comes to your table.
Etiquette: a few simple habits
- Take slow, gentle puffs. Draw for three to five seconds, like sipping through a straw, then pause. Puffing hard and fast overheats the bowl and makes the flavor harsh.
- You don’t need to inhale deeply. Much of the enjoyment is the aroma.
- Passing the hose: fold it back so the mouthpiece doesn’t point at the next person.
- Don’t touch the charcoal or bowl. They’re very hot — ask the staff if the smoke gets thin or the taste changes.
- Take a break if you feel light-headed. It can happen on an empty stomach or after a few drinks. Stop, rest, drink some water and let the staff know.
- Keep your voice at a comfortable level. Many Tokyo lounges, including ours, are small and relaxed.
How long does a session last?
One pipe usually lasts around one to two hours, depending on how fast you smoke and the flavor. It’s a slow, social experience — plan on at least an hour. If you want to work or read for longer, our Long-stay Set (¥5,000) is made for that, and every seat has a power outlet and free Wi-Fi.
Getting to shisha bar IORI from Shibuya
- Take the Tokyu Toyoko Line from Shibuya to Gakugei-daigaku Station — about 7 minutes.
- Use a Local train; express services don’t stop at Gakugei-daigaku.
- Tap in and out with a Suica, PASMO or other IC card, or buy a ticket at the machine.
- Leave via the East Exit. We’re on the 3rd floor (the top floor) of the Gakugei-daigaku Front ONE Building, about 30 seconds from the station.
Reservations
We only have 10 indoor seats, so booking ahead is a good idea. The easiest way is a direct message on Instagram (@iori_shisha) — English is fine. Just tell us the date, time and number of people.
